Lakers' Efforts in Vain? Timberwolves Throw a Curveball in Kuminga Sweepstakes: No Long-Term Co

　　The NBA free-agent market is winding down, but Jonathan Kuminga’s future remains up in the air. Many thought the Los Angeles Lakers were the frontrunners to land the 22-year-old forward via a sign-and-trade, but now things have stalled. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t the only ones interested—the Minnesota Timberwolves have thrown their hat in the ring with a short-term offer, heating up the competition.

　　The Lakers and Cavaliers still want him, but the trade puzzle is far from solved. When free agency opened, whispers had the Lakers offering Kuminga around two years, $20 million. But since he’s a restricted free agent, any deal has to go through the Atlanta Hawks as a sign-and-trade. A month later, little has changed. Both L.A. and Cleveland remain keen, but they’d need to clear cap space and rope in a third team to take on contracts—a messy operation.

　　For the Lakers, the most likely trade chips are Jarred Vanderbilt, or expiring/team-option deals like Jake LaRavia and Dalton Knecht. Word is, the Hawks aren’t exactly thrilled with those pieces, so L.A. might have to toss in multiple second-round picks to get it done. Cleveland’s situation is similar—they’d probably have to offer Max Strus or Dennis Schroder, and find a third team to absorb salary. Tough all around.

　　The Timberwolves, however, are playing a different game. Instead of a forced three-year commitment, they’re dangling their $6.05 million taxpayer mid-level exception for a short-term deal. The pitch? Come prove yourself on a contender, then chase a bigger payday when the cap opens up in 2027.

　　NBA rules say a sign-and-trade contract must run at least three years, so if the Lakers or Cavaliers pull it off, Kuminga would be locked into roughly $15–18 million annually for three seasons. If he thinks his market value is higher than that, Minnesota’s “one-year rental, then bet on yourself” approach might actually be more tempting.

　　Funny how things circle back. When free agency started, the Lakers, Cavaliers, and Timberwolves were all rumored to be in the hunt. Back then, Minnesota was focused on chasing LeBron James. Now that LeBron has made his choice, the Wolves have turned their attention back to the 22-year-old wing.

　　After a month of back-and-forth, the Kuminga sweepstakes have basically returned to square one. The only difference? Teams have already tweaked their rosters and cap sheets. Whether they can find a deal that works for everyone will decide where Kuminga ends up.
